Wednesday this week was my mother's birthday and being a fan of the Twilight saga, she wanted to go see New Moon. She was planning on taking my younger sister with her, but then she asked me if I wanted to go too. After reading the posts from my friend Rabukurafuto, I decided to at least give New Moon a try. Keep in mind, I haven't read any of the books and have only seen a few scenes of the first Twilight film, so my thoughts probably won't mean much because I have little to no information on the story.
The movie begins with Bella Swan waking up from a nightmare involving the fact that her vampire love interest Edward Cullens is immortal while she isn't. She's then greeted by her father saying Happy Birthday, giving her his gift and a gift from her mom. And how does she react? She doesn't want free gifts and complains about now being a year older. This is brought on several times by both her friends in school and by the Cullens, each time frustrating her. This is goes on for maybe ten minutes; a teenager having age-issues all because of a little bad dream. What a way to start a movie, huh?
Bad stuff happens instantly and one scene after another goes by really fast, which is something I personally don't like. How can you enjoy a movie when the plot seems to be rushed? Fortunately, it starts to go more smooth and steady when Edward tells Bella his family will be moving away from Forks so that she won't be put in danger of a group of vampires who are very strict about keeping their existence a secret from humans. Bella takes it rough and starts to isolate herself from everyone else for three or four months. When she finally decides to go do something to get her mind off things is when weird stuff starts to happen. She begins seeing translucent images of Edward talking to her and reminding her of a favor he asked her earlier to not do anything reckless. This is the first thing in the movie that was confusing me. Is Edward sending apparitional messages to Bella that only she can see, or is it that she's been so obsessed over Edward leaving that her mind's playing tricks on her? She's been asked by a thuggish-looking biker if she wants a ride on his motorcycle. Edward tells her not, but she doesn't listen and gets on but suddenly starts seeing multiple Edward ghosts and tells the biker to stop and let her off. Since then she's suddenly takes a turn towards more masculine interests like motorcycles, andrenaline, and action movies.
And Rab, this one's for you. Guess who gets a major role in this movie? *drumrolls* Jacob! Can you spell that with me? S-E-X-Y! I say he pretty much resembles how you described him in your last Twilight review, though here he has gotten more buff. Anyway, Bella goes to meet Jacob, bringing him some old motorcycles to which the agree to fix together. Jacob soon introduces her to some new friends of his(forgot their names). From then on, Bella and Jacob appear to grow very close as friends, maybe even more(?). They get the old motorcycles to work again, to which they decide to test it out. Bella takes off fast on her bike and starts seeing Edward ghosts again which cause her to crash. Jacob helps wipe the blood from her head by removing his shirt. I swear, every female around me in the theater was making deep breathes and giggling excitingly. Hell, even my mom cracked a smile. But back on the Edward ghost subject, the first time it happen, she seemed very desparate to see it again. So wait, you mean she's been with Jacob all this time fixing motorcycles just so she could see brief images of her vampire boyfriend again ignoring the risk of possibly getting herself killed? You know, that happens a few times in the movie. She's in about, at best, three situations that could put her in mortal danger, Edward tells her not to do it, yet she does it anyway and nearly dies. Seriously, Bella, the next time your boyfriend(or mind) tells you not to do something that is clearly dangerous and lethal, LISTEN DAMMIT!
Perhaps my favorite scene of the movie is when Bella invites Jacob and the rest of her friends to go watch a violent action movie, yet only Jacob and... bum, bum, BUM, Mike showed up. I can only sum this scene out like this.
"Mike, you are a fricken pussy! You saw some violence and you get sick to the point of vomiting? So much for your chivalrous behavior from the first book. And God, you have such stupid hair!"
But soon after, when Bella and Jacob seem to be having a moment, Mike comes back saying he feels better, to where out of nowhere Jacob is suddenly annoyed by him and threatens to beat him up. Some time afterwards, Bella goes to see what's wrong with Jacob and finds that he has cut his hair. Nooooooooooooo! Jacob, I liked your hair better when it was long. Now it makes you look like another teenage boy with anger-issues. Now comes the awesome part of the story, revealing that Jacob has joined the tribe of shapeshifters and can now transform into a large wolf.
This is as much as I'm gonna explain, because I don't wanna spoil too much for those who haven't seen it yet. My thoughts on New Moon is what you might call a like-dislike opinion. After Edward leaves Forks, the movie seems to then go into a pattern, shifting from parts I like to parts I don't like and so on and so forth. Rab, I hope you can see this movie soon and, especially, enjoy more Jacob goodness.
